Since July 1, 2021, the following rules apply to new installations:

• Chain link fences with a mesh size of more than 30mm will be required to be slatted;
• No structure or fixed equipment that can be used to climb over the wall of a pool or enclosure shall be installed within one metre of the pool or enclosure;
• Pools with diving boards shall be installed in accordance with BNQ Standard 9461-100 for the prevention of cervical spinal injuries related to diving accidents.

​This regulation for the safety of residential pools will now apply to all pools, regardless of when they were installed.

Residential Pool fence regulations

The residential pools offer many hours of fun in summer, but they may also cause a risk. The residential pool or spa owners are responsible for their safe use and must ensure to meet the regulations for residential pool safety. Most of the children that drown in a swimming pool have escaped the vigilance of their supervisor for even a second.  These are mainly young children who access to a swimming pool whose gate does not close or lock automatically.

What you need to know about residential swimming pool safety regulations.

According to the regulations on residential pool safety, the mandatory fence for above ground, in ground or semi-in ground pool must be:

• Be of 1,2 m to 1,5 m in high. (Confirm with the requirements of your municipality.) 
• Prevent the passage of a round object 10 cm in diameter between each post.
• Make it impossible climbing from the outside, impossible to hold onto or rest your feet on it. 
• Have a gate with an automatic closing devise, inside the enclosure.
• Take note that a hedge or shrubs do not constitute as an enclosure.​

Licence required, a regulation on the safety of for residential swimming pool

In order to ensure compliance of with the standards of the regulations on the safety of residential swimming pools, each municipality now requires a licence for all new swimming pool installations or for the installation of a construction, such as a patio or a deck, which can give access to a residential swimming pool.

The active supervision of an adult is the most important: 
Never leave a child unattended, even for a single second.
